Objectivity [tentative]
Taking inspiration from the work and research of Prof. Eshel Ben Jacob “The Social Life of Bacteria”, Objectivity [tentative] is a series of experiments and interventions exploring “smart” microorganism, drawing a link between microbial morphogenesis and design ecosystems, between structure and behavior. Bar-Shai synthesized traditional lab techniques as used by scientists and artistic inquiries to visualize the “chemical tweets” of microbial complex network and communication systems as reflected in their advanced social behavior and decision-making while developing colonies with intricate architectural patterns. The body of work exhibited here, includes petri plates with treated bacteria and prints from the Soundscapes series, utilizing pure sound waves and a range of frequencies to initiate sound-generated topographies for bacterial growth. Each outcome results in a unique generative growth-pattern and is directly conditioned to the initial settings introduced by the artist.
Nurit Bar-Shai
Nurit Bar-Shai is an interdisciplinary artist who works at the intersection of art, science and technology. Her research and artistic practice looks into microbial social networks and communication systems, collective collaboration, emergence, in vitro ecology and biomaterial fabrications. As an activist and educator working with biological systems, she conducts experiments through creative collaborative inquiries and addresses the ethics and the emerging practices of Do-It-Yourself biology and Citizen-Science. Bar-Shai is the co-founder of Genspace NYC, a community biotech lab in Brooklyn, NY, where she founded and directed the Arts and Culture program.

Objectivity, הנה סדרת ניסויים והתערבויות עם מיקרואורגניזם "חכם". העבודה קושרת בין התנהגות של חיידקים לבין מבנים ומערכות אקולוגיות מעשה ידי אדם. בעבודתה, בהשראת מחקרו של פרופ' אשל בן יעקב אודות מערכות תקשורת בין מיקרואורגניזם, בר-שי משלבת טכניקות מעבדה מסורתיות לצד מחקר אמנותי, ומייצרת מתווים חדשים כדי לדמיין את ה"טוויטים הכימיים" של ההתנהגות החברתית וקבלת ההחלטות בעולם החיידקים. בתערוכה מוצגים צלחות פטרי והדפסים מסדרת העבודות Soundscapes, בה בר-שי עושה שימוש במגוון גלי קול, תדרים והרמוניות המשפיעים במישרין על תצורות גדילת החיידקים. בעבודות אלו האמנית קושרת בין מבנים, התארגנות מערכת וסביבות מבוקרות. כל תוצאה של חיבור כזה גורמת לדפוסים אקראיים ייחודיים המהווים ייצוג חזותי של מערכות תקשורת חיידקית.
נורית בר-שי
בר-שי היא אמנית רב תחומית הפועלת בקו התפר בין אמנות, מדע וטכנולוגיה. כאמנית חוקרת ומחנכת היוצרת עם מערכות ביולוגיות, היא משלבת בין פרקטיקות במעבדות ביולוגיה לטכניקות ושיטות יצירתיות ושיתופיות העוסקת בהיבטים האתיים, התרבותיים והחברתיים שביוטכנולוגיה מעלה כחלק מתנועת ה Do It Yourself Biology ומדע אזרחי. המחקר והיצירה שלה בוחנים מערכות תקשורת ורשתות חברתיות מיקרוביאליות, שיתופי פעולה וקבלת החלטות קולקטיביים, מבנה והתנהגות, ו״גידול״ חומרים חדשים מבוססי ביולוגיה (BioMaterial) במעבדה. בר-שי היא מייסדת שותפה של Genspace, מעבדת ביוטכנולוגית קהילתית בברוקלין, ניו יורק.
